Why We'll Never Cap Widget Views

Most widget providers meter your traffic and switch your widget off when you hit a monthly view limit. Here's why Rated Stores made unlimited views a permanent guarantee — and how the industry ended up billing you for being popular.

There's a moment every view-capped widget customer eventually experiences. Traffic spikes — a viral post, a press mention, Black Friday — and the social proof on your website vanishes. Not because anything broke. Because you got popular, and your widget provider's business model treats that as an upsell event.

We think that's backwards. So we made a permanent product guarantee: every Rated Stores plan — including the free one — serves unlimited widget views. Here's the reasoning, written down so we can be held to it.

How the industry ended up metering views

Widget platforms discovered that view caps are a beautifully efficient upgrade trigger. You install a free widget, it works, you forget about it — and then the month your store finally gets traction, the widget shuts off and displays an upgrade prompt where your reviews used to be. The provider's incentive is literally your worst moment: the more successful your site, the more you pay, and the penalty for not paying is public.

Common caps in the market run from a few hundred views per month on free tiers to 50,000–150,000 on paid tiers, often per app — so reviews and a social feed are metered separately, and going over on either one blanks that widget until you upgrade or the month resets.

Why we refuse to do it

1. A widget that can disappear isn't social proof — it's a liability. Trust elements have to be boring and permanent. If your rating badge might not render tomorrow, you can't build a page around it.

2. Views cost us almost nothing. Widget payloads are static files on an edge CDN; review data is edge-cached too. Metering something this cheap and charging for it is margin engineering, not cost recovery.

3. The incentives are wrong. A provider that earns more when your traffic spikes has no reason to make widgets lighter or caching better. We'd rather compete on the things that actually matter: widget quality, review collection, and how many sources we can pull your reviews from.

What we do instead

  • Unlimited views on every plan. We show you your view counts in your dashboard — analytics you can use — but we never bill for them and never gate rendering on them.
  • Fail-open, always. If your plan lapses, your widgets degrade to the free tier's styles. They never go blank.
  • One plan, all widgets. No per-app arithmetic. Your plan unlocks widget types across your whole account.

Our upgrade path is honest instead: more widget styles, photo and video reviews, branding removal, more review-source integrations. Things you choose, not things you're ransomed into.

Holding us to it

This page is the commitment. If you ever see a Rated Stores widget deactivated because of traffic, we've broken our own rule — tell us, loudly.
